My Grandma's House

My story happened in the late 70's, early 80's in Louisville ky. I was about 4 or 5 but

can remember it just like it happened yesterday. Im not for sure exactly the history

of my grandmothers house but there were a few strange incidents. Like my grand-

mother having coffee made for her, when she was alone in the house. She didn't

drink it ,she poured it out . There was one time when my uncle and his cousin were

playing hide and seek in the house (they were teenagers) when it was my cousins

turn to hide, it was time for my uncle to go find his cousin. When he got to the 2nd

floor ,the attic door was shutting, so he went and opened it and called out to her

but there was no answer. Up in the attic is a small door ,maybe about 3 feet tall. It

was opened, and my uncle got on his hands and knees and peeked in .He saw a

figure and started talking to her. "Come on now, your not playing fair , I can see you,

I see your eyes".   Just then my cousin touched him on his back and asked who was

he talking to and he turned white. He couldn't talk, he just got up and ran downstairs.

My cousin told my uncle that she had hid downstairs. I spent alot of nights in that

house and it was definitely haunted , my grandma told me by 2 old ladies that had

died and had their funeral in the house. But that would explain the ladies footsteps,

but we use to hear heavy mans footsteps. She doesn't live there any more, new

people moved in, i wonder if they have any strange incidents?

My House

From: (Renee Young)

<< My family and I moved into my house when I was 1 year old. My mom was pregnant with my younger sister at the time, which is one of the reasons why we where moving. My parents got a pretty good deal on an old house that needed some work.

Several weird things happened in that house, all of them I experienced first hand. I have many encounters to tell, and will work my way down from the most recent (because over the years the occurrences have dwindled, and I believe the spirit that once occupied our house is gone) to the first encounter I can remember. And these encounters are more than just the usual hearing of foot steps.........

1) This was when I was about 16 (I am now 19). I had a a friend sleeping over. This was her first time staying at my house. We where up till the wee hours of the night (like most teens do on sleep overs). Around 2am we decided to go to sleep. I was sleeping in my bed and she was on the floor. I had just started to drift off when I herd my friends calling my name. Mad that she had just waken me I asked her 'what?'. She said that someone had poked her through the floor. I told her just to ignore it. A few minutes later she crawled into my bed with me and said she was scared cause the poking was getting more rough and starting to hurt.

2) I was probably about 13. I was in the livingroom with my mom, dad, sister, and my dads friend. We had the a/c on cause it was hot that night. Next to the window that the air conditioner is in, there is a small shelf about 4ft from the floor mounted on the wall. On the shelf are little nic-nacs and 2 porcelain saucers on stands. While we where all watching tv, one of the saucers jumped off of it's stand fell 4ft to the floor on it's edge, rolled around, and it didn't even chip. We where all baffled! My dad said it was from the vibrations from the a/c. But that had never happened before, and if it was cause of the a/c, don't you think the stand would have fallen off the shelf too?

After it fell my parents started arguing about how to place the saucer so this wouldn't happen again. In the middle of there argument my dad dropped the saucer by mistake from not even 3ft off the ground...and the whole thing just shattered. This made my parents argument even more intense. So I figured it was time for me to go to bed. As I walked up the stairs I noticed how hot the upstairs hall was. And I was dreading having to sleep in my hot stuffy room that night. But to my surprise when I walked into my room it was just as cool as it was downstairs with the a/c. What was even weirder was the fact that I had left my windows open (my windows are always open in the summer) and now they where closed. This all kind of freaked me out a bit, but I was grateful that my room was nice and cool.

3)This doesn't have an exact time frame cause it happened all the time. Whenever you would sit on the couch in the old livingroom (we got an addition on our house, which is what I think made the ghost leave) and be facing the tv, out of the corner of your eye on your right you would see a figure come into the living room, but when you would turn there would be nothing there. And for a few years, when sitting in the same place, you would see a little white figure close to the ground , come from around this tan chair we had to the left of the couch (I think it was the ghost of a cat). I know I was not just seeing things either because my mom and my sister claimed to have seen the figures too.

4)When I was about 10 or 11 my sister and I where sitting in the livingroom doing home work. We where the only ones home, and it was in the late fall. I got up to go turn on the thermostat. As I got up I distinctly herd a man laughing in our kitchen. When I herd this I just completely froze. My sister kept asking what was wrong, and I just told here to be quiet. Finally when I got the nerve to move again I just sat down and cried. It had scared me so much. And the weird thing is my sister never herd the voice.

5) This is another general thing that would happen in my house. I just remembered it now because of what I had just mentioned happening in my kitchen. Whenever the house was quite you could here pots and pans shifting around in the cabinets. And on occasions you could hear the cabinets opening and closing......freaky!!!!

6) This incident was the most scary to me, and for many years I had blocked it out of my memory until I recently started reading ghost stories on the net. I could have been no older than 5. My sister and I, at that time, shared a room. We had bunkbeds, she had the bottom one and I had the top one (cause I was older, and it made me feel special). We also always slept with a little night light like most young kids do. Well, one night I was awaken to the sound of my door opening (it has a certain sound that will wake me to this day when opened). Thinking it was my mom coming in to check on us, like she sometimes did, I popped my head out of the sheets to greet her. Only what was standing in the door way was not my mom. It was a blurry tall figure. It had no shape really, but I could make out the outline of a head, body, and one arm. But what stands out in my mind most was how tall it was, and the fact it was all blurry. I just sat there for a moment and stared at this 'thing' that was in my room. Then it started to turn it's head toward me. I was so scared at that point, I pulled the sheets over my head and laid there frozen from fear for what must have been an hour or so. When I finally gathered enough courage, I peeked outside the blankets the 'thing' was gone and my door was closed. I have no idea if I was even able to fall back asleep that night.

I asked my mom the next day if she had come into my room. And she said no and asked why. When I told her what happened she just said that it was probably a bad dream. But I know that this was no dream! I can still remember it today, and it very unnerving. In fact I also remember how I used to pile as many stuffed animals as I could on the left side of my bed, so that if this 'thing' visited again I wouldn't see it. But most importantly, so it wouldn't see me!

These are all the incidents that have happened in my house that I can remember. I wouldn't be surprised if more stuff has happened, but I have blocked it out of my memory completely. Although I would like to remember it because I am very interested in ghosts now, and less afraid than I was years ago. And now I realize that the ghost in our house meant us no harm. I believe the ghost was of the old man who built and died in our house (it makes sense), and he was only there to make sure we would treat the house well and to see that we where good people.

Although these experiences make up most of the paranormal events in my life, they are not all I have experienced. I have seen and herd things in friends houses, businesses, and even a hotel room. But I will save these stories for another time.

Ghost of Gamble's Run

(Linda Gamble)

The Ghost of Gamble's Run

John Gamble was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania born in 1814.

He was a house carpenter by trade, and helped build the second house in

New Cumberland.

This story took place in 1850. John Gamble bought fifty and one half

acres after he moved his family to Wetzel County. The land across the

river from Sardis, Ohio. The land he bought contained two orchards. One of the

orchards contained crab apples. He went right to work making cider with

hired help. On the afternoon of his thirty - sixth birthday, November 12th, he

left home in hurry for New Martinsville with a skiff to put barrels in,

but he never returned home.

John was often buying up staves, tanbark, and wagon

spokes, and copper products. He carried them down river on flat boats to

Cincinnati. That was before he moved.

John had a wagon and sold it to the Whiteman Brothers, who lived on

what is now the Cox Farm, and is now the property of the Short Line

Railroad Company and the heirs of John R. Brown, he took there note for twenty

dollars, and after going on to New Martinsville, on his return home he stopped

back at the home of the Whiteman Brothers. There he asked if they wanted to

cash in the note. They said 'no'.

He then purchased to calf from Leb Mercer. John paid him all but two

dollars. When meeting him at the home of the Whiteman Brothers, Mercer

asked for the rest of the money. John pulled a five dollar bill out of his

pocket, and asked Mercer if he had change. He replied 'no'. Mercer asked him if

that was all he had. He said 'no' he had near two hundred dollars.

It was beginning to get dark, and John started home, and told Mercer

to stop by his house in a few days to pick up the rest of the money, but

never returned home.

Mercer watched John get into his skiff and shove off. Mercer started

to go toward him.

That night Mercer walked in his front door at two o' clock in the morning, wet and muddy.

The evidence against him was bad. He presented the note the Whiteman

Brothers had given to John as payment.

The body laid there for over a year, and in the fall of 1851 there was

a cornhusking near Point Pleasant ridge, and a number of people from New

Martinsville attended.

Among them was John Hindman. On their way home they decided to take

different routes to see who got there first. Hindman went over the hill

coming upon what is now Gamble's Run (named from Gamble), and he was

walking on a path, which was then the river bend, he saw a figure, who said: "I

am John Gamble; Leb Mercer killed me. Your courts have not done me justice.

I want him arrested and that will do me justice," and suddenly disappeared from view.

John's body was found near Ray's Run and had no money or papers or

anything else on him when he was found. His pocket in his pantaloons

were cut off.

Hindman being very badly scared, walked rapidly toward town, and the

next morning had told what he had seen. It was not believed by many people.

Though he had never seen John, he described his walk, clothes, etc.

Friend Cox who had seen John the night of his death said the description Hindman gave was correct.

In 1852 the incident was brought to the attention of the Wetzel County Court. A grand jury investigated and heard testimony.

Since the only person to have first hand knowledge of the circumstances

was the ghost, it was requested that the ghost testify, and when the ghost didn't

make an appearance, the ghost as held in contempt of court.

Mercer was arrested for murder in the first degree, which under the

old law the meant death or freedom. He was released on the grounds that

the ghost evidence would not go to court.

Many people believed that he was guilty. It was said that his lawyer

had a hard time from confessing to the crime.

He moved back to St. Mary's, WV. It is said that he acted very

strangely ,and often muttered to himself.

My Guard at Night

I will tell this story as my mother told me.

When I was A child I had a picture hanging above my bed. It had the Lord's prayer on it. It also had a picture of a man with a robe and a crown on. He had no face, it was just a white circle. At night I would see him floating up and down my hallway saying the Lord's Prayer. I was scared , but yet i felt secured. He was guarding my house. So now I do believe guardian people or whatever are there.

***************

This day my mother is not alive. I have the same picture in my room. Right next to her picture is all the academics. She died in a car accident in Jan. 2000. Her spirit still lives on. I see her sometimes laying down with me. I also see every detail about her. So I am thankful I have that memory of her.
